Trekking: on Everest, how quickly wealth and welfare collide

On center stage–at the top of the world–the discussions of wealth and welfare begin. Will  they overshadow respect for the mountains, the sherpa people, and the lives lost, in a country supported with–and undermined by–an unbelievable influx of foreign money, yet rampant egos, laced with respectful travelers and humble habitués?  Three weeks ago, I savored the energy that splashed over spring fever and  careened across paths and pinnacles…while the wind whispered of the dangers. I'm saddened by the bluntness of change. My thoughts are with the gracious people who reside in the surreal solokhumbu yet manage to hold onto their culture, their humanity, their respect.
